Operations From Mar 1954, the division was responsible for airlifting personnel, cargo, and mail in Europe. Almost immediately after it commenced operations in Europe, the 322d became involved in a major airlift of French troops (Project Bali Hai) from bases in France to Indo China. Initially concerned only with operations in Germany and France, it soon began operating throughout the entire USAFE area of responsibility. In addition to its routine duties, the division supported numerous humanitarian missions to Turkey, Iran, Morocco, and Pakistan, among other states. It also provided airlift support in the following crises: the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956; the Hungarian uprising in 1956; the Lebanese revolution in 1958; support for UN forces in the Congo in 1960-1961; the invasion of India by Communist Chinese forces in 1962-1963; airlift of peacekeeping forces to Cyprus in 1964; and the Middle East crisis of 1967. Between 1954 and 1968, the division supported numerous USAFE and NATO exercises. From Jun 1978, the 322d managed tactical airlift forces stationed and operating in the European theater and coordinated strategic airlift from the United States and other origins. It also assumed responsibility for all aeromedical operations and administrative airlift in the theater, including highly positioned military and civilian U.S. and foreign government officials. In addition, the division supported military exercises such as Ardent Ground, Dawn Patrol, Flintlock, and Cold Fire/Reforger. In 1985 the 322d acquired peacetime responsibility for airlift management in Africa.

3509AP - 834th Air Division   "All the Way" ( 834th AD controlled the C-130 "Bombers" & all Tactical Transports in the RVN )   3509AP - Nose Plug for a M-121 10,000 pound Bomb used to kill Communist Troop concentrations and to clear landing zones for Troop insertions.  Used Condition......(sold) ( see Nose Plug for a 1,000lb Bomb from the 4133rd BW ) Take the following info with a grain-of-salt; very sparse info on the Units that flew the missions/etc. This operation was called "Commando Vault" I think, some or most missions came from Clark AFB, PI and started in 1968. In 1969 the 463rd TAW started regular missions to RVN; the M-121 was left-over from WWII and when supplies were depleted the BLU-82 Daisy Cutter(currently used) was  brought onto the scene.

We were one of the last Undergraduate Pilot Training classes at "Willie" and transferred to Laughlin AFB, TX in "mid-Basic" shortly after soloing in the T-33, and during the 1955 Christmas training break.  All of the students (officers & cadets) in the class were unmarried, thus saving the USAF the cost of dislocation allowances. Very few of the student pilots in "J" Flight wore that patch and there is only one photo of it in our classbook. It didn't appear at Laughlin......" Graduates were fully qualified USAF pilots; then they were sent to specific upgrade training (F-4, C-141, etc. )
