DET 30, 1035th USAF Field Activities Group
U. S. Air Force "KEFLAVIK ICELAND", UnUsed.....inquire
(formerly UI#150)
- - - -
partial History
Det 360 was a detachment of:
The 1035th USAF Field Activities Group (Group organized on July 7, 1959)
Redesignated 1035th Technical Operations Group June 26, 1972.
Redesignated "Air Force Technical Applications Center" or AFTAC in 1980.
Mission/Operations
Among the things that AFTAC does is to operate Filter Units that were and are used to sample air for radioactivity.
Sample is collected and sent to a central lab for analysis to determine what kind and amount of radioactive material.
This was particularly important in the era of nuclear detonation testing in the atmosphere.
AFTAC also operates a global network of seismographs for the same purpose.
Det 360 appears to have been a small lab unit that operated at Keflavik with a Det 310 being a Ground Filter Unit located at site H-2 at least in the 1960's after the Navy had taken over the former 667th AC& W SQ RADAR site for communications operation in 1961. The site and all operation was abandoned in 1970. Unknown when Det 360 ceased operations at Keflavik.
