Ryan's Raiders of the 44th TFS, 388th TFW  flew Commando Nail F-105Fs:
In early-1967, to reduce losses, it was decided to attack some targets in NVN at night.
Several F-105Fs were modified under the Commando Nail program with an improved RADAR and Bomb Release switches for the rear-seater.  Aircrews (Ryan's Raiders) were selected from the 44th TFS at Korat to fly hazardous all-weather low-level bombing missions over North Vietnam, starting April 26 1967.
Six of the Commando Nail F-105Fs were later reconfigured and assigned to the Wild Weasel III Program

Only partial History I could find on the unit is one short blurb from a non-Official site:
"Pil-sung Range (51 Electronic Warfare Training Sq) DSN 784-6387, FAX 784-6388. Pil-sung Range is located at the foot of Mt Taebeck, one of the highest mountains in Korea. It is 160 miles due east of Osan and takes about 4 1/2 hours travel time by road. It is now manned by U.S. & Korean Civilian Contractors. There is a dining facility, Club, gym facilities, cable TV, video library and one medic. It is VERY remote."

Operations History
The 56th PS was activated on 15 January 1941, defending the war industry in Southern California until June 1942.
On 20 June 1942, the 56th (now) Fighter Squadron, took their Bell P-39 Airacobras to Nome, Alaska, where they won a Distinguished Unit Citation for operations against the Japanese in November 1942. In 1943, the 56th FS returned to the ConUS, and were based at Bartow Army Air Base, Florida, where they converted to North American P-51 Mustangs. One year later, on 1 May 1944, the 56th FS was disbanded.
Re-constituted and activated at Selfridge AFB, Michigan in November 1952, the 56th (now) Fighter Interceptor Squadron was assigned to the 4708th Air Defense Wing, and equipped with North American F-86F Sabres. In February 1953, the 56th FIS began conversion to F-86D interceptors, and was assigned to the 575th Air Defense Group.
On 18 August 1955, under Project ARROW, the 56th FIS designation was transferred from Selfridge AFB to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, initially under operational control of the 4706th Air Defense Wing, then the 58th Air Division (Air Defense) on 1 March 1956, where the squadron was the primary air defense unit for southwestern Ohio and the research facilities at Wright-Patterson.
In the Spring of 1957, the 56th FIS began re-equipping with the North American F-86L Sabre, an improved version of the F-86D which incorporated the Semi Automatic Ground Environment, or SAGE. The unit became proficient with both the F-86L and SAGE, and won an Air Defense Command "A" award for live rocket SURE-FIRE missions in the late summer of 1957.
The transition into the F-86L was short-lived however, as the squadron began transition into the "missile-with-a-man-in-it" (the Lockheed F-104A) in May 1958. The 56th FIS was now under operational control of 30th Air Division (Air Defense), before being transferred to the Detroit Air Defense Sector in April 1959.
Deactivated at Wright-Patterson on 1 March 1960

Detachment One's partial History; from a long-time Collector:
"The 84th was assigned to Hamilton AFB, CA when it was Redesignated a FIS in January 1950
At Hamilton it provided an alert function at varying levels
There was an Alert Operating Location (while stationed at Hamilton AFB) as a joint operation (maybe a Wing Detachment or at least an Operating Location) of the 83rd FIS & 84th FIS at the Siskiyou County Airport from November 1962 – January 1964 (for the Cuban Missile Crisis). It was then taken over by the 82nd FIS from October 1965 until the Siskiyou Alert Facility was closed in July 1971 (the alert function probably ended before the Jul y 1971 facility closure).
The 84th FIS moved from Hamilton AFB (San Rafael Airport) to Castle AFB, CA in September 1973 where it provided an Air Defense Alert function.
The 84th FIS picked up the alert commitment at George AFB, CA on January 7, 1974 and officially became Detachment 1, 84th FIS at George AFB as of July 1, 1975 – June 30, 1981.
The George AFB location is the site attributed with producing the DET 1, 84th FIS insignia.
The 84th FIS was redesignated a FITS on July 1, 1981 and ended all of its’ alert operations.
George AFB is the only official detachment I’ve seen reference to in any 84th FIS and or Det 1 histories, records, and letters I have gotten over the years. The 84th FIS certainly provided alert aircraft at various locations as back fill, deployment or training operations; although they may have been loosely referred to as a det they weren’t officially one."
( I have altered some of the above verbage )
- -  Detachment One partial History from Veterans/Collectors    - -
