Operations
One of four African-American fighter squadrons to enter combat in World War II. Combat in ETO and MTO, 17 Feb 1944-20 Feb 1945. Trained in the Reserve for and performed search and rescue, in addition to some medical air evacuation missions, mainly in the southwestern United States, 1956-1974. In 1974, mission changed to training for a combat SAR role, while continuing to perform some search and rescue. Changed, in mid-1987, to a fighter role and trained for counterair, interdiction, and close air support missions. Deployed several times since late 1992 to Turkey to help enforce the no-fly zone over Iraq and to Italy to support UN air operations in the Balkans.

Flew F-100 Super Sabres in 1957 out of  Turner AFB, Georgia under the 31st FBW; F-100s given to the 356th TFS/354th TFW at Myrtle Beach AFB, SC March 15, 1959.
Reassigned to George AFB, California (on paper) on the same day & gained the aircraft assets of the 1st TFS/413th TFW.
Relocated to Homestead AFB, FL in 1962 stood air defense alert during the Cuban Missile Crisis from October-November 1962.
Deployed to Vietnam circa 1965 to 1970; InActivated in South Vietnam; Reactivated at Homestead in late-1970 and Equipped with F-4E Phantom IIs; Inactivated in July 1971.
Re-activated in 1978 with F-4Es as a F-4 Replacement Training Unit, 1st TTW; Re-equipped with F-4Ds in 1980; Inactivated in 1983.
ReActivated in 1985 flying F-16A/B Falcons; Inactivated in October 1986 and assets given to the 308th TFS.

"I was a member of the 314th Fighter Squadron at Luke AFB,Arizona. The 314th was Reactivated around 1987 under the 58th Tactical Training Wing. In 1991 the unit was Re designated as the 314th FS under the 58th Fighter Wing. On 1 Apr 1994, the 58th Fighter Wing was Deactivated and Transferred Kirkland AFB, New Mexico as the 58th Special Operations Wing (SOW). Also on 1 April 1994 the 56th Fighter Wing from MacDill AFB, Florida was Transferred to Luke AFB, Arizona when the 314th Fighter Squadron (FS) was Deactivated being Replaced by the 61st Fighter Squadron."

Flew B-29s in the Korean War out of Yokota Air Base, Japan
After the outbreak of the Korean War in the summer of 1950, the group deployed to Japan and was placed under the operational control of the Far East Air Forces Bomber Command (Provisional). On 7 Aug 1950, it flew its first Korean combat mission, striking marshalling yards at Pyongyang, capital of North Korea. Attacked enemy communication lines and supported United Nations ground forces. Targets included rail facilities, oil centers, bridges, roads, troop concentrations, airfields, and military installations. Became a paper unit in April 1951.

partial History of U-2s in SEA
SAC sent a detachment of 4 x U-2s from the 4080th SRW based at Laughlin AFB, TX  to Bien Hoa AB, RVN (OL-20) on February 14, 1964 to fly high-altitude reconnaissance missions over North Vietnam.
On February 11, 1966 the 4080th Wing SRW was Redesignated 100th SRW and moved to Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona.
The U-2 DET(OL-20) (possibly known as the 4028th SRS DET or 4080th SRW DET(??) at Bien Hoa AB, RVN was Redesignated 349th SRS o/a June 25, 1966
On July 1 (or 11th), 1970 the 349th SRS(OL-20) at Bien Hoa AB relocated to  U-Tapao RTNAF, Thailand and was Redesignated  99th SRS  (OL-RU) o/a November 1, 1972
Relocated to Beale AFB, CA June 30, 1976 and continued flying the U-2
