partialHistory
On 19 March 1957 at Donaldson AFB, South Carolina, the 1st Aeromedical Evacuation Group was activated
under the USAF Tactical Medical Center and included the 21st and 22d Aeromedical Evacuation Squadrons.
On 30 June 1957, the USAF Tactical Medical Center and subordinate units were assigned to the 464th Troop Carrier Wing and relocated to Pope AFB, North Carolina. The USAF Tactical Medical Center was deactivated on 16 September 1957, while at the same time, the 1st Aeromedical Evacuation Group and 21st Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron were reassigned to Pope AFB and the 22d Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron was reassigned to Stewart AFB, Tennessee.
In 1965, the 1st Aeromedical Evacuation Group responded to the Dominican Republic Crisis by mobilizing a tactical aeromedical system. Hundreds of patients were safely evacuated to the United States. Part of the 21st Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron deployed to Vietnam in February 1967 in direct support of the 903d Aeromedical Evacuation Flight.
On 1 July 1970, the 21st Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and 22d Aeromedical Evacuation Squadrons were deactivated.
All personnel and equipment were reassigned to the 1st Aeromedical Evacuation Group. The 1st Aeromedical Evacuation Group transferred from Tactical Air Command to Military Airlift Command’s 375th Aeromedical Airlift Wing as a part of the consolidated aeromedical evacuation system in December 1974.
On 1 July 1975, the 1st AEG was deactivated and the 1st Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron was Activated

Operations
Converted to B–47 jet bombers in 1954. Service-tested a "super wing" concept with 70 B–47s, Jul 1959–Apr 1961. Moved to Barksdale AFB, LA, on 1 Apr 1963, replacing 4238th Strategic Wing and absorbing that wing’s B–52 and K–135 resources. Supported 2nd AF’s post-attack command and control system, Apr 1963–Mar 1970. Conducted bombardment training and air refueling operations, Apr 1963 to date except for periods when all aircraft and crews were on loan to SAC organizations involved in combat operations in Southeast Asia.
Began supporting SAC operations in SEA with aircraft and personnel in 1965 and increasingly supported these operations in 1966 and 1967. On 15 Apr 1968, gained a second B–52 and KC–135 squadron, again becoming a SAC "super" wing.
From late May 1972 until 26 Oct 1973, loaned all wing B–52 resources to SAC organizations in the Far East and SEA;
from May 1972 to early Nov 1972, loaned all but four of the wing’s KC–135s and a few aircrews to other SAC units.
After the return of combat resources, the wing continued supporting SAC operations in SEA into 1975, on a reduced scale.

partial History
Established as 3d Bombardment Wing (Light) August 10, 1948; Activated August 18, 1948
Redesignated 3d Bombardment Wing (Tactical) October 1, 1955; Redesignated 3d TFW January 8, 1964; Redesignated 3rd Wing December 19, 1991
Highlights for the RVN era
Circa January 1964 the 3rd Redesignated 3d Tactical Fighter Wing, and was reassigned to England AFB, Louisiana.
It was part of an overall effort to reduce the number of wings in Japan. At the same time, the wing gave up its B-57s, becoming the last bombardment wing to fly the medium bomber. The move also ended the long association with the 8th and 13th Bombardment Squadrons and nearly 22 years of active duty in the Far East.
The 8th and 13th, however remained in PACAF and were realigned under the Thirteenth Air Force. They were attached to the 41st Air Division and later to the 2d Air Division as the USAF mulled over the fate of the B-57B. During this time, they continued the rotational nuclear alert at Kunsan AB South Korea. Increasing needs for aircraft in Vietnam caused the aircraft to be moved to Clark AB, Philippines.
At England AFB, the wing transitioned into flying primarily North American F-100D/F Super Sabres. It was deployed to Bien Hoa AB, South Vietnam from 1965–1970. The wing's F-100s generally operated only in the RVN, leaving NVN to the F-4s and F-105s.
In late 1969 the F-100s of the 3d TFW began a phaseout at Bien Hoa. The 510th TFS was deactivated on November 15, 1969, the 531st TFS on July 31, 1970. The 90th TFS was redesignated the 90th Attack Squadron on November 15, 1969 and was re-equipped with the Cessna A-37 Dragonfly and assigned to the 14th Special Operations Wing at Nha Trang Air Base on October 31, 1970.
Highlights for the Post-War era
After its withdrawal from Southeast Asia in 1971, the wing transitioned to the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and moved to Kunsan AB South Korea with two tactical fighter squadrons (35th, 36th TFS), the scene of much of its success during the Korean War. By 1974, the wing moved to Clark AB, Republic of the Philippines, helping that nation transform into a stable democracy.
The Wing deployed six F-4Es to Turkey for Operation Desert Storm in early 1991 where they flew some of that aircraft's last combat sorties.
The wing remained at Clark AB, though treaty negotiations with the Philippines broke down, and it was decided to move the 3d Wing beginning in 1992-93. The Mount Pinatubo eruption in June 1991 changed these plans and forced the wing's hasty relocation to Elmendorf AFB, Alaska on December 19, 1991, where it replaced the 21st Wing which previously was the host organization for Elemendorf.
With the reassignment, to Alaska, the wing was also redesigned as the 3d Wing and was realigned to the multi-mission objective wing concept.
It expanded the air defense mission of Alaska with the F-15E aircraft to include deep interdiction and air-to-air capabilities. Added an airlift mission in April 1992, and a long-range airborne surveillance, detection, identification, and command and control mission in 1993. Since 1993 it has been deployed worldwide on Missions.

post-WWII into the 1950s
Trained with B-29s in global bombardment operations, Nov 1947-Dec 1948. Began converting to B-36 bombers in Jun 1948. Controlled two B-36 groups, Dec 1948-Feb 1951, and three B-36 squadrons, Feb 1951-May 1958. Flight-tested XC-99 in Jun 1949 and evaluated RB-36 in 1950. Deployed at Nouasseur AB, French Morocco, 10 Jul-13 Sep 1955. Had an attached B-52 squadron, 1-10 Dec 1957, and converted to B-52 bombers and KC-135 tankers, May-Jun 1958. Trained in global strategic bombardment and air refueling operations.
SEA Activity
Beginning 13 Apr 1965, the wing deployed its forces to the Pacific area to support SAC combat operations in Southeast Asia. All wing bombers and tankers, along with aircrews and some support personnel, deployed in Apr-May 1965. In the United States, the wing gained the assets of a second B-52 squadron from another wing in Jun 1965, giving it a bomber capability again. All B-52 resources deployed to the Pacific area by 1 Aug 1965, along with most of the wing's remaining support personnel, leaving the 7th Wing as a small non-flying cadre to operate Carswell AFB, TX. Wing headquarters remained non-operational to c. 1 Dec 1965, when B-52/KC-135 resources began returning. The wing continued to support SAC operations in Southeast Asia through the remainder of the conflict and into 1975, but on a reduced scale except for the period c. 1 Sep 1969-c. 28 Mar 1970, when most wing resources were required overseas, and only a small cadre remained at home. In addition to its other activities the wing conducted B-52D consolidated training for SAC, 1 May 1972-c. 15 Dec 1972 and 5 Jan-15 Dec 1973.
By mid-1973 most wing KC-135 resources had redeployed, and most B-52 resources returned by Jan 1974.
post-RVN era
The wing resumed nuclear alert status on 3 Jan 1974. From 4 Dec 1973 to May 1975, the wing conducted B-52D replacement training, and from Jan 1974 also conducted B-52D combat crew training, i.e., providing B-52 flight training to novice crews. Beginning in Jun 1974 the wing also conducted B-52 and KC-135 Central Flight Instructors' courses. Participated in numerous USAF and NATO exercises worldwide. Used B-52s for ocean surveillance and ship identification in joint naval operations. Wing KC-135 aerial refuelers supported tanker task forces worldwide. In Oct-Nov 1983, the wing supported the invasion of Grenada with aerial refueling. Also in 1983, B-52 crews began training with a new weapon system, the SRAM (Short Range Attack Missile) and later, in 1985, the ALCM (Air Launched Cruise Missile). Flew numerous atmospheric sampling missions, 1986-1987, in response to the Chernobyl (Russia) nuclear reactor accident. Deployed air refueling personnel and equipment to provisional wings in Southwest Asia, Aug 1990-Feb 1992. The wing hosted the first Soviet START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) exhibition inspection team in Sep 1991. Began preparations for base closure at Carswell AFB in Jan 1992. Released of all operational capabilities on 1 Jan 1993. Closed Carswell AFB on 30 Sep 1993 and moved to Dyess AFB, TX on 1 Oct 1993. Equipped with B-1B and C-130 aircraft, the 7th Wing regained its combat and worldwide tactical airlift missions.

Background
Background on this patch provided by Mark "Froggy" Michaud, Veteran of the "Dirty Thirty" from 1969 to 1970
"We were attached to the 8th Supply Squadron.....P.. Pen's right hand is (by design) giving the "peace sign"....We gave the assignment of creating the patch to one of our new incoming airmen (as an initiation of sorts). We were pretty dissatisfied with the look of the patch so most of us (including myself) threw ours away......we had 30 of them made, one for each of the guys. The one you have may be one of only a few in existence, given the fact that we all thought the patch was poorly done.
There was once a list of all of the members of the Dirty Thirty.  It hung in a bar in Ubon named the Corsair Club -- a place where all of us frequented regularly......It would be great to hear from other members of the Dirty Thirty......."

Operations
Air defense in Japan, Aug 1948-Jun 1950. Combat operations in Korea, Jun 1950-Jul 1953. Provided air cover for the evacuation of civilians from Seoul, 26-28 Jun 1950, then conducted interdiction and close ground support missions. The tactical group and its squadrons moved to South Korea on 11 Aug 1950, while the wing remained in Japan and assumed operational control of other combat units. Wing and group reunited on 1 Dec 1950, performed a variety of missions, including some strategic bombardment, air cover for bombers, armed reconnaissance, and low-level bombing and strafing for interdiction and ground support. Air defense in South Korea, Jul 1953-Oct 1954. Air defense in Japan, and maintenance of a quick-reaction strike force, Oct 1954-May 1964. On 18 Jun 1964, the wing moved without personnel or equipment to California, absorbing resources of the 32d TFW. Trained with F-4 aircraft until it moved to Thailand in Dec 1965 to commence combat operations, including bombardment, ground support, air defense, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance. In May 1968, the wing was the first to use laser-guided bombs (LGBs) in combat. During its final years of combat, the wing used B-57s for night attacks, AC-130 gunships for ground support and armed reconnaissance, and F-4s for fast-forward air control, interdiction, escort, armed reconnaissance, and other special missions. After North Vietnam invaded the Republic of Vietnam in Mar 1972, the 8th Wing was augmented by additional F-4 units. To make room for these forces, the B-57 squadron moved to the Philippines. The wing continued combat in Vietnam until mid-Jan 1973, in Laos until 22 Feb 1973, and in Cambodia until 15 Aug 1973. The last scheduled F-4 training flight occurred on 16 Jul l974, and on 16 Sep the wing moved without personnel or equipment to Kunsan AB, South Korea, where it absorbed resources of the 3d TFW. The 8th became responsible for air defense of South Korea.

some History
( partial-unedited from USAF History Site  =  verbage in black )
( partial-unedited from Air Force Academy's site =  verbage in blue )

The origin of the 10th Air Base Wing began Aug. 21, 1941, when the War Department constituted the 73rd Observation Group, activating it Sept. 1, 1941, at Harrisburg, Pa. Two months later, the group moved to Godman Field, Ky., to engage in training. It was redesignated as the 73rd Reconnaissance Group in April 1943, moving to Camp Campbell Army Airfield, Ky., in June. The group was redesignated again in August 1943 as the 73rd Tactical Reconnaissance Group and moved to Key Field Mississippi in November of that year.  December 1943 it was Redesignated the 10th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance).
The 10th settled into RAF Chalgrove, Great Britain, in February 1944, as part of the 9th Air Force. Throughout the war, the 10th flew important photographic and reconnaissance missions. It received special recognition for flying the first mission on D-Day and for the last operational mission of the war: “First on D-Day, Last on V-E Day.” The group received a Distinguished Unit Citation for its pre-invasion efforts over the Normandy beaches May 6-20, 1944.
At the end of the war, the 10th became part of the Army of Occupation, in Germany. The group flew damage assessment missions over much of eastern Europe. In June 1945, the group was redesignated the 10th Reconnaissance Group. In June 1947, the group returned to the United States without personnel or equipment. The Air Force started a “wing-base” service test in 1947. Under this program the 10th Reconnaissance Wing was organized Dec. 3, 1947, at Pope Field, N.C. On Aug. 25, 1948, the 10th Reconnaissance Group was redesignated the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. The 10th TRW was then inactivated April 1, 1949.

Established as 10th Reconnaissance Wing 14 Nov 1947; Organized 3 Dec 1947;
Redesignated 10th TRW 25 Aug 1948; Inactivated 1 Apr 1949
Activated as 10th TRW 10 July 1952
On July 10, 1952, the 10th TRW was re-activated in Germany, with many of its assigned units in France.
The wing moved to Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France, in November, but construction delays forced the wing’s headquarters to return to Spangdahlem AB, Germany, in May 1953.  Before transitioning to RB-66 and WB-66 “Destroyers” by the mid-1950s, the wing flew a variety of reconnaissance aircraft. In the late 1950s, France placed new limits on the number of American forces stationed on its soil. Two wings, including the 10th TRW, relocated to Great Britain. Although a few of its assigned units remained in France until the mid-1960s, the wing moved to RAF Alconbury on July 20, 1959.
With its headquarters at RAF Alconbury, the 10th TRW operated its B-66 “Destroyers” from RAFs Alconbury, Bruntingthorpe and Chelveston. In 1965, the 10th TRW received a new airplane, the RF-4C “Phantom II.” The wing’s mission changed slightly in 1976. It inactivated two of its three RF-4C squadrons. The 527th Tactical Fighter Training Aggressor Squadron, flying F-5E “Tiger Ils,” activated at RAF Alconbury
April 1,1976, brought a new mission to the wing. The squadron provided combat training to North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces by teaching and demonstrating soviet air tactics-under the title of Dissimilar Air Combat Tactics. The 527th flew the first “Aggressor” sortie from RAF Alconbury in May.

Redesignated: 10th TFW 20 Aug 1987

In the late 1980s, the 10th TRW experienced more dramatic changes. After 34 years with the same mission, the 10th TRW received a new one. This 1st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron deactivated in June 1987 and its RF-4Cs left the base. On Aug. 20, 1987, the wing was designated as the 10th Tactical Fighter Wing.  During 1988, two squadrons of A-10A “Thunderbolt IIs,” the 509th and 511th Tactical Fighter Squadrons, arrived from RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge. As the A-10s arrived, the 527th Aggressor Squadron moved to RAF Bentwaters.
Both A-10 flying squadrons, kept a strong close air support vigilance and remained ready to perform their mission in a contingency situation. The 511 TFS deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm from December 1990 to June 1991. The wing’s A-10s played an important part in the air phase of the Gulf War, attacking tanks, Scud missiles, and other ground positions.
The 10th TFW again went through dramatic changes in the early 1990s. The wing drew down its A-10 mission, September 1991-March 1992. Without its aircraft, the 10th TFW continued to support the RAF Alconbury community. The wing was finally redesignated as the 10th Air Base Wing in March 1993.

Redesignated 10th Air Base Wing  31 Mar 1993; Inactivated  1 Nov 1994;

Iinactivated October 1994; 10th Air Base Wing re-activated Nov. 1, 1994 as the support wing for the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo.

Operations
Became operational on 1 Jul 1949. From 14 Nov 1949 to 20 Feb 1950, the 22 Bombardment Group was detached from the wing, which controlled only the attached fighters of the 1 Wing. The bomb group was detached again for combat in Korea, 4 Jul-c. 31 Oct 1950, and during this period the wing controlled no aircraft. When operational, the wing trained for proficiency in global strategic bombardment, adding air refueling to its mission in 1952. The wing deployed at Mildenhall RAF Station, England, Sep-Dec 1951, and at Upper Heyford RAF Station, England, Dec 1953-Mar 1954. From Apr to Jul 1957, it deployed at Andersen AFB, Guam. The wing was not tactically operational 11 Mar- 15 Sep 1963, while converting to B-52 bombers and KC-135 tankers. Supported Fifteenth Air Force's post-attack command and control system with EC-135s, Sep 1964-Mar 1970. The 22d was a "super" wing, 1966- 1971, with two bombardment and two tanker squadrons. From 10 Mar to c. 1 Oct 1967 the wing was reduced to a small "rear-echelon" non-tactical organization with all tactical resources and most support resources loaned to SAC organizations involved in combat operations in Southeast Asia. The wing continued to support SAC operations in the Far East and Southeast Asia through 1975, and from 10 Apr 1972 to 29 Oct 1973 again had all its bomber resources loaned to other organizations for combat and contingency operations. KC-135 resources were also on loan from 10 Apr to Sep 1972; afterwards a few tankers returned to wing control. The wing maintained a strategic bombardment alert posture, 1973-1982, but in 1978 it added conventional warfare missions, including mine-laying and sea reconnaissance/ surveillance. From 1982, the wing provided strategic air refueling and airlift in support of worldwide USAF and other DOD operations and training exercises. In 1983, moved personnel and cargo in support of Chadian resistance to Libyan incursions and conducted airlift and refueling missions during rescue of US nationals in Grenada. Provided specialized refueling support to SR-71 aircraft reconnaissance operations worldwide, c. 1985-1990. Supported F-117 deployments to Saudi Arabia and contributed aircraft and personnel to logistics efforts in support of the liberation of Kuwait, 1990- 1991. From the end of 1992 to 1994, the wing flew humanitarian airlift missions to Somalia. Provided air refueling in support of deployments to Haiti in 1994. During the 1990s, the wing deployed crews and aircraft to support no-fly missions over northern and southern Iraq and over Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 1999, wing aircraft and crews deployed to the Mediterranean to refuel Allied aircraft over Serbia. After the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. in September 2001, wing-supplied tanker crews and aircraft air-refueled combat aircraft on missions to the Afghanistan area.

Won the Mackay Trophy for successful deployment of 90 F-84s from Bergstrom AFB, TX to Furstenfeldbruck AB, Germany, in Sep 1950 via Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, and England. This was the first long-range mass flight of jet aircraft in aviation history. Deployed at Yokota AB, Japan, 19-30 Nov 1950, then split into two echelons, one at Taegu AB, South Korea, 1 Dec 1950-30 Jan 1951, and the other at Itazuke AB, Japan, 9 Dec 1950-31 Jan 1951. Flew combat in Korea, 6 Dec 1950-30 Jun 1951, including armed reconnaissance, interdiction, fighter escort, and close air support missions. The two echelons combined at Itazuke on 1 Feb 1951, continuing combat from that base. Provided close support for largest airborne operation of the Korean War and escorted B-29 bombers to the Yalu River in North Korea, coming into conflict with enemy MIG-15 fighters. Returned to the United States in Jul 1951 but deployed to provide air defense at Misawa AB, Japan, 6 Oct 1952-13 Feb 1953. Added air refueling as a mission, Jun 1953-May 1955 and Aug 1955-Jun 1957. Deployed at Sturgate RAF Station, England, 7 May-17 Aug 1955. Maj Adrian E. Drew, a member of the wing, broke the world speed record on 12 Dec 1957. Trained fighter pilots, mechanics, forward air controllers, and air liaison officers. Performed numerous small-scale deployments, both beyond and within the United States, to meet operational requirements. Took part in joint training exercises with U.S. Army forces. In 1990 and 1991, provided support personnel and equipment for UN operations in Southwest Asia to liberate Kuwait. In 1992, added an electronic combat mission to its fighter role. Between 1992 and 1998, served as the only Air Force wing with operational F-111 or EF-111 aircraft. During the 1990s, deployed personnel and aircraft periodically to Southwest Asia for training exercises, expeditionary rotations, and enforcement of no-fly zones over Iraq. In 1998, began training Republic of Singapore F-16 pilots. After enemy attacks on New York and Washington in 2001, the wing deployed personnel and aircraft globally in operations associated with the War on Terror.

Operations
Added aerial refueling to mission in 1959 and began operating post-attack command and control system for Fifteenth Air Force in Jan 1965, maintaining this capability through a rear echelon during the absences of the remainder of the wing. Controlled a non-equipped Titan missile squadron, Dec 1960-Dec 1961.
SEA Duty
Except for a small rear echelon left at Ellsworth AFB, SD, the wing's headquarters staff, tactical aircraft and crews, and most support personnel were integrated into ARC LIGHT forces for combat in SEA: c. 9 Mar-c. 21 Sep 1966, c. 15 Jan-c. 19 Jul 1968, and c. 9 Sep 1969-c. 18 Mar 1970. From Apr 1972 to Oct 1973 it had most of its TAC aircraft/crews loaned to SAC organizations involved in combat . The wing continued supporting Pacific forces with planes and crews into 1975.
(part of the 4133rd BW(P) on Guam)
Converted from B-52G to B-52H models in 1977. Performed airborne launch control functions for USAF Minuteman missile wings with EC-135 aircraft and provided logistic support to the 44th Missile Wing. Expanded B-52H mission in 1984 to include sea reconnaissance, surveillance, and conventional operations from forward bases overseas. Upgraded tanker force to KC-135R in 1985-1986 and replaced B-52H with B-1B bomber in 1987. In 1989, won the Fairchild Trophy for excellence in bombing and navigation and the Omaha Trophy, presented to the outstanding wing in SAC. Provided tanker support for restoration of democracy in Panama (Dec 1989-Jan 1990), and deployed tanker and airborne command post aircraft to Southwest Asia (Aug 1990- Mar 1991). Lost air refueling mission in Jun 1992 and airborne command post mission in Sep 1992. In Aug 1993, flew B-1s around the world for the first time. Elements deployed to various locations for training exercises, including occasionally to Egypt (Nov 1993; Aug-Dec 1999) and England (May-Jun 1996; Jun-Jul 1997). In Nov 1997, deployed four B-1s and crews to SW Asia for a show of force against Iraq, the first real-world contingency use of the B-1 bomber. A year later (Nov 1998), the wing deployed three B-1s and crews to Southwest Asia for punitive attacks against Iraqi targets, the first combat use of the B-1. After terrorist attacks against the United States in Sep 2001, the wing deployed B-1 aircraft and crews to Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean, for bombing missions against enemy targets in Afghanistan.
