Operations History
During World War II, the 343d Fighter Group was activated in Alaska on 3 September 1942 and began operations immediately. Provided air dfense for the Aleutians; bombed and strafed Japanese camps, antiaircraft emplacements, hangars, and radio stations on Kiska; escorted bombers that struck enemy airfields, harbor facilities, and shipping. Flew its last combat mission in Oct 1943, but carried out patrol and reconnaissance assignments in the area until the end of the war. Later trained, carried mail, and served as part of the defense force for Alaska.
Reactivated as part of Air Defense Command in 1955 and performed air defense mission for north central United States until 1959
Reactivated as operational tactical fighter group at Elmendorf AFB in 1977. Inactivated in 1980. It became Eielson Air Force Base’s host unit on 1 October 1981.
It's operational squadron was the 18th Tactical Fighter Squadron, flying the Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. On 19 December 1991 the 3d Fighter Training Squadron was moved without personnel or equipment to Eielson from Clark Air Base, Philippines. The 3d administered the Cope Thunder program and flew Bell Helicopter UH-1N Hueys for range support.
On 8 June 1994 the 343d Composite Wing was redesignated the 343d Tactical Fighter Wing. On 1 July 1991, it was redesignated as the 343d Wing. Also that year, the 343d gained a second flying unit, the 11th Tactical Air Support Squadron, which flew O/A-10As.
Additional flying squadrons assigned to the new wing included the 25th Tactical Air Support Squadron flying the Cessna O-2A Skymaster and North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco.
The 25th TASS O-2s were distinguishable by orange panels on the nose, tail and wings. In July 1986, the O-2s were retired, and on 15 September 1989 the OV-10s were also retired and the squadron inactivated.
The 18th TFS realigned in 1991, transitioning to Block 40 F-16C/D Fighting Falcons.
On 20 August 1993, the 11th TASS inactivated, being replaced by the 355th FS from the 354th Fighter Wing.
The 3d FTS helicopters were reassigned to other bases on that same date and the unit was inactivated, being replaced by the 353d Fighter Training Squadron from the 354th FW.

Began upgrading to F–16C/D in Jan 1990 and in Aug 1990 became first operational TAC unit to employ the LANTIRN all-weather/night navigation and bombing system. Sent support personnel to Southwest Asia in Aug 1990, and on 5 Jan 1991 deployed one fighter squadron (the 69th) to fly combat missions. Following the ceasefire, continued to support peace-keeping operations with periodic aircraft deployments to Saudi Arabia. As a result of hurricane damage at Homestead AFB, FL, two fighter squadrons from there moved to Moody AFB, GA, in Aug 1992, and in Nov 1992 were assigned to the 347th, making it the largest F–16 wing in the USAF. The 347th continued proficiency training through participation in joint service and multinational exercises.

Operations
Replaced the 342d Fighter-Day Wing in Nov 1956. Switched from Fighter-day to Fighter-bomber training in Jul 1958. From Jul 1958 through Apr 1966, had one or more squadrons constantly deployed overseas. During the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, part of the wing manned a provisional air division at McCoy AFB, FL. During the Dominican Republic crisis of 1965, the 354th deployed more than 400 people and 18 F–lOOs to Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico, and San Isidro AB, Dominican Republic. The conflict in Southeast Asia drained wing strength; one squadron moved to Japan in Nov 1965, another to Spain in Apr 1966, and another to South Vietnam in Aug 1966, leaving the wing with a single flying unit. This last squadron moved to South Vietnam in Apr 1968. The mobilized ANG 113th TFW moved to Myrtle Beach AFB, SC, in Apr 1968, absorbing resources of the 354th. The 354th had no units and existed primarily on paper until it moved to South Korea in early Jul 1968 to replace the 4th TFW. There, it was remanned primarily by ANG people on active duty under 4th TFW control. When the 4th TFW departed, the 354th assumed active F–100 operations. Its two ANG squadrons returned to the United States in Jun 1969, and for 10 days in South Korea the wing was again without tactical components. Several rotational squadrons provided the needed tactical force after this brief lapse. On 14 Jun 1970, the 354th passed its resources to the 54th TFW and returned to the United States without personnel or equipment, absorbing resources of the 4554th TFW at Myrtle Beach AFB, SC. Charged with T/AT–33 combat crew training and with becoming proficient with A–7 aircraft; on 10 Oct 1972 the wing split into Advance and Rear echelons; the Advance element moved to Thailand and commenced combat operations in Southeast Asia on 16 Oct 1972. Interdicted lines of communications to halt the flow of North Vietnamese supplies to enemy units in the South; provided close air support to ground troops; and escorted surface ship convoys up the Mekong River to Phnom Penh. Continued combat in Vietnam until mid-Jan 1973, in Laos until 22 Feb 1973, and in Cambodia until 15 Aug 1973. The split-wing status continued until 23 May 1974; during this period, tactical units rotated between Thailand and the United States. Recombined at Myrtle Beach, the 354th continued routine A–7 operations until 1977, when it converted to A–10 aircraft. Elements participated in operations in SEA, 15 Aug 1990–25 Mar 1991, inflicting heavy damage to Iraqi armor and artillery emplacements, as well as cutting off enemy supply lines.

Operations
Replaced the 132d Fighter-Bomber Wing in Jan 1953. Trained to maintain combat proficiency. Conducted air refueling, Sep 1954- Jul 1958. Rotated tactical squadrons to France, 1954-1956, and to Italy, 1955-1957. Served as conventional strike force in Europe, 1962-1963. Moved to the United States in Jul 1963 and converted to F-4 aircraft in 1965. Moved to Phan Rang AB, South Vietnam, in Mar 1966 for combat operations. In addition to its F-4 squadrons, also controlled several F-100 squadrons in 1966. In Oct 1966, wing designation moved "on paper" to Da Nang AB, South Vietnam, giving the 366th new personnel, equipment, and facilities. By early 1967, many of the wing's combat missions involved flying cover for F-105 strike aircraft, offering numerous opportunities for aerial combat with North Vietnamese MiG aircraft. Wing pilots scored 18 aerial victories in Southeast Asia. In 1972, gained a squadron with an electronic countermeasures mission and another with a forward air control mission. Moved to Thailand in Jun 1972 with little change in combat missions but flew only F-4s. Moved without personnel or equipment to the United States in Oct 1972 to replaced the 347 TFW at Mountain Home AFB. The 366th become operational with F-111F aircraft. In 1977, in a three-way switch of aircraft, it transferred F-111Fs to a wing in England and gained F-111A aircraft from a wing at Nellis AFB, NV. Thereafter, in addition to a wartime strike/interdiction mission, the wing also trained replacement aircrews for the USAF's F-111A community. Acquired electronics countermeasures capabilities with addition of EF-111A radar jamming aircraft in late 1981. Operated an electronic combat range and provided mobile electronic range support for exercises held by other units. In Dec 1989, deployed EF-111A aircraft to support to USAF units involved in the invasion of Panama. The 366th also deployed EF-111A aircraft and maintenance support personnel to Saudi Arabia in Aug-Sep 1990, and it conducted extensive electronic warfare operations in Southwest Asia. In the summer of 1991, the wing relinquished its F-111A aircraft and the replacement crew training role; its complement of EF-111A aircraft departed the following year. In the meantime, the 366th transitioned to the composite wing concept, beginning with the introduction of F-16C/D fighter and F-15E strike fighter aircraft in the fall of 1991, adding F-15C fighters and KC-135R tankers in mid-1992. A squadron of B-52G bombers was also assigned in Jul 1992, and these in turn were later replaced by B-1B bombers in 1994. Regularly deployed expeditionary forces to contingencies in Southwest Asia such as Operations SOUTHERN WATCH and DESERT STRIKE. Deployed three squadrons and a base support element to the CENTCOM theater to participate in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as providing combat air patrol and air refueling assets in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE. Wing's mission narrowed to a fighter role in 2002

Aircraft: KC-97, 1956; B-47, 1956-1960; B-52, 1961-1993; KC-135, 1961-1993
B-47 era: The wing was reactivated as the 379th Bombardment Wing (Medium) on November 1, 1955 at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida (replacing the 4276th Air Base Squadron). From November 1, 1955 to May 31, 1956 the unit was attached to the 813th Air Division at Pinecastle Air Force Base, Florida. It's operational squadrons were the 524th, 525th 526th and 527th Bomb Squadrons. Upon activation, the unit was bestowed the honors, history and colors of the World War II Eighth Air Force 379th Bombardment Group.
In April 1956, the wing began training for air refueling and strategic bombardment operations with the B-47E and KC-97G. It was an assigned unit to the 823d Air Division at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, from June 1, 1956 to January 9, 1961. During this time, the wing was attached to Sidi Slimane Air Base, French Morocco, from March 6 to May 12 of 1957 during a REFLEX deployment coming under the control of SAC's 5th Air Division. Beginning in October 1960, the wing began transferring its B-47s to other SAC wings and became non-operational.
B-52 era: The 379th was reassigned to Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan without personnel or equipment in January, 1961, assuming the aircraft, personnel and eqipment of the inactivated 4026th Strategic Wing. The 4026th SW was a provisional SAC MAJCOM wing activated on 1 August 1958, being equipped with B-52H Stratofortresses and KC-135 Stratotankers. The 4025th was established by SAC to disburse it's B-52 bombers over a larger number of bases, thus making it more difficult for the Soviet Union to knock out the entire fleet with a surprise first strike.
With the B-47 being programmed for retirement, and in order to retain the lineage of the provisional 4026th SW, Headquarters SAC received authority from Headquarters USAF to discontinue the 4026th Strategic Wing and to activate an AFCON unit which could carry a lineage and history. SAC inactivated its provisional wing and in its place the 379th Bombardment Wing (Heavy) was activated on 9 January 1961, assuming the resources of the inactivated 4026th. The 379th immediately resumed training for strategic bombardment and air refueling operations. Personnel and KC-135 tankers from the 379th were deployed to forward bases in the Pacific to support combat operations over Southeast Asia from 1965-1975, however it's B-52H aircraft remained at Wurthsmith on nuclear alert.
In 1977, the 379th exchanged their B-52Hs for the conventional bomb capable B-52G. In 1989, the Air Force selected Wurtsmith as one of seven bases that would house LGM-118A Peacekeeper ICBM Peacekeeper Rail Garrison. A Rail Garrison would address the survivability problem by which 25 trains, each with two missiles, would use the national railroad system to conceal themselves. It was intended that this system would become operational in late 1992, but budgetary constraints and the changing international situation led to it being scrapped.
Modern era: Retirement of the B-52G began in the late 1980s, however the Gulf War of 1990-1991 resulted in a temporary delay in the inactivation of B-52G units. Wurtsmith-based B-52s were flown on missions against Iraq staged out of Prince Abdullah AB in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. These planes were part of the 1708th Bombardment Wing (P)', a provisional wing formed from B-52s out of Barksdale, Castle, Wurtsmith, and others. The planes arrived at dawn on the first day of the air war.
One plane flew 29 missions out of Jeddah, the most of any bomber crew in the theater. During the Gulf War, 379th Bomb Wing aircraft carried the "Triangle K" tail flash in honor of their World War II predecessors and heritage.
The 379th Bombardment Wing was inactivated on June 30, 1993 as a result of the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure process which closed Wurtsmith AFB. On the overcast foggy morning of December 15, 1992, the last B-52, 57-6492, Old Crow Express, was flown to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
