The 426th has a very confusing history.......the following is a narrative that binds facts and Veteran's rememberances together.
“I have carried the 426th TFTS patches as TFS for years. The pilots that I got mine from were emphatic that it was a TFS not a TFTS. Maybe it was a fighter pilot thing – I don’t know.  I’ve never been able to find any official documentation that it was a TFS. I have seen several official AF Biographies showing assignment to the 426th TFS and even a book that said the 426th TFS provided air defense in USAFE but, nothing official. The book probably meant the 526th TFS. I think the Snoopy design is from the F-4 days with the 58th TFTW/TTW;  the Eagle design is from the F-15 days with the 405th TTW. I’ve also seen some info that the 426th had flown out of Williams with F-100D’s. I’m thinking that a CCTS that had been doing that was replaced by the 426th TFTS and used its’ personnel and equipment.”

If you know more, or different, information on this unit and the insignia it used, please email: Jack@LJMilitaria.com

Possible partial History
426th TFTS assigned to 58th TFTW(redesignated 58th TTW in 1977) January 18, 1970 - January 1, 1981
Although assigned to the 58th TFTW(based at Luke) the 426th operated from Williams AFB, AZ
426th TFTS assigned to 405th TTW January 1, 1981 - November 29, 1990(assigment start date may be wrong)
426th TFTS exchanged its F-100Ds for F-4Cs in 1971 and operated the Phantom II until conversion to the F-15A/B Eagle in 1981
Trained German and other Allies at Luke AFB, Arizona in F-4s while assigned to the 58th TFTW
426th TFTS may have been DeActivated when the 405th TTW transferred F-15 training to the 58th TTW(?)

1956 = stationed at McGhee Tyson Airport and assigned to 355th FG;

partial History of the 469th as a F-105 Unit
469th Tactical Fighter Squadron "Fighting Bulls" were stationed at Korat RTAFB, Thailand NOV 8 1965 - NOV 18 1968

The 469th TFS transferred from the 355th TFW at McConnell AFB, Kansas to the 6234th TFW at Korat RTAFB on NOV 8 1965.
The 6234th was probably redesignated the 388th TFW or ????
Squadron started flying combat missions in F-105s on 15 November 1965.
Besides destroying numerous ground targets in North Vietnam the 469th killed two MIG-17's in aerial combat.
Around November 1968 personnel were sent to other units???
Members of the squadron joined the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat RTAFB, Thailand.
Some were transfered to the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing at Takhli.

partial History of the 469th as a F-4E unit
The 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron transitioned to F-4Es in November 1968.
I think new personnel staffed the Squadron at this point in time???

( If you know more, and can explain it....let me know......another Russian Novel in USAF History!! )

( I have been told that the one-eyed Bull is for F-105s; Two-eyed Bull patches are for the F-4 Era ?? )

F-104Cs in Vietnam
Almost all the F-104Cs (fighter-bomber version) were deployed to Vietnam for 21 months;
The first 15 Starfighters arrived in April 1965 (476th TFS/ 479th TFW). From April 20 to November 20 of 1965 they carried out 2,927 missions of machine-gunning, bombing and escorting strike aircraft, sometimes in North Vietnamese air space.
The 476th TFS returned in June 1966 operating from Udorn RTAFB, Thailand. The F-104Cs were now camouflaged in accordance with operational needs and in July were handed over to the 436th TFS and in October to the 435th, still belonging to the 479th TFW. From June 1966 to July 1967 the F-104Cs carried out escorting and bombing missions on North Vietnam, with over 5,290 sorties. The last Starfighter left Thailand prior to 1968 - it's duties taken over by the Phantom F-4D.
